Excessively broad patents could slow down the 3D printing industry's progress, VentureBeat's Ricardo Bilton warns. A Stratasys (SSYS) patent for printing with chocolate is named as one example of a 3D-related patent where obviousness and/or prior art could be claimed. Though incumbents such as Stratasys and 3D Systems (DDD) could benefit at times from broad patent interpretations thanks to their sizable portfolios, it could just as easily prove a dual-edged sword, as many IT giants can vouch.
