Never mind the Dow, today's new all-time high for the S&P 500 is much more significant when it comes to record breaking, and not just because of the  expansive scope of the index. A lot more money tracks the S&P 500, along with the funds that buy them. With a total S&P 500 market cap of nearly $14T, investors have $2.673T in open-end mutual funds and $186.98B in ETF's linked to the index. In contrast, there’s just $12.36B in Dow-linked funds.
