Apple (AAPL +0.7%) plans to start "production of a new iPhone similar in size and shape" to the iPhone 5 in calendar Q2, setting up a "possible summer launch," the WSJ reports. The paper adds Apple is working with partners on a cheaper iPhone with a 4" display and "different casing" than the iPhone 5, and that a 2H launch for the device is possible. Both scoops mesh with iPhone rumors (I, II, III) that have been floating around in recent months. Samsung's Galaxy S IV, replete with a 5" display, is expected to go on sale in late April and May (depending on the market).

So now Samsung's new phone is pushed till May before its actually available? Sounds like they introduced the S4 prematurely, when it was just a prototype a month ago in Radio City Music Hall to great fanfare (but the "sizzle was sold then, without the steak"). Samsung made a mistake showing its new model's ideas months before it could ship it... it gives Apple time to now use the ideas in Apple's own new phone's R&D.

Ouch. That sure didn't help the stock at all. It was on pace for a nice 2%+ rally today until that news hit. I think most people were hoping for a larger screen.

In other positive news, it looks like China was happy with Tim Cook's apology and change in the warranty policies. So they have that going for them at least.

But man, that's the quickest 2% intraday drop I've seen on AAPL in a while, and it almost dipped down into the red for a second there!

"Similar in size and shape to the IPhone 5." Sounds like an IPhone 5 to me. No wonder the stock just shed 6 points. This is a train wreck!

It sure is, which is why we all can't stop watching it it! I hopped on the short bus on the way down at about $435. Can't say there isn't a smile on my face right now, but at the same time I feel bad for Apple. They could have turned this whole thing around with nothing more than a larger screen size and a few other simple gadgets, that would have been enough.

Oh, so another WSJ rumor "according to people familiar with the device's production". And rational people actually act on this kind of "news"? Man, investors are a jumpy bunch, with little interest in actual information.

Look like support is around $423, but with this bad news it may plunge all the way through that down to the next support level around $417.

Bigger isn't necessarily better. Try putting an S3 or S4 in your pocket or look at people chatting away with a phablet (that is bigger than his/her face) next to the ear. Remember the very first Motorola phone that is longer than your fist?

Rule #1 in business: give the consumer what they want. And consumers, for the most part, want larger displays. If someone wants a smaller screen then they can just buy an iPhone 5, but Apple should have made the 5S with a 4.3" or larger display since one of the biggest complaints on the iPhone 5 was that the screen wasn't is big as the competition.

Apple got to where they are primarily by providing what they decided people WOULD want, as opposed to what common wisdom said they DID want.

You are entitled to your opinion, but it's pretty ridiculous of you to claim that your simplistic ideas are what Apple 'should' do.

What do you mean should have; "Apple should have made the 5S with a 4.3" or larger display since one of the biggest complaints on the iPhone 5 was that the screen wasn't is big as the competition"; Apple hasn't released anything yet! Your making comment based on rumors.

    "Bigger isn't necessarily better."

It just depends what you want to do with it. The current iPhone screen is fine for using it as a phone or a music player, but it is not much good for using as a Kindle substitute or Internet browser, especially if you are old enough to use bifocals.

Is this really news, I assume the phone the WSJ is talking about is the 5S, what Apple needs to do is get the larger iPhone 6 out to the market this summer or at least ahead of Xmas instead of next year.

What if the next iteration of the iPhone, coming out this summer, is principally aimed at the China Mobile subscribers?! The internal tweaks make it compatible with CM network. The margins improve because it is not significantly different from the 5. The increase in revenues, I will leave to your imagination and the Charlatans on Wall Street :-)

Mind boggling that a rumor about something that has already been rumored about would cause the stock to shed 2%. The stock would also probably shed 2% if the rumor was that the new screen is larger-meaning appl can no longer innovate, is playing catch-up, and all they can do is change the size of their displays. You can't win.

Better bow to Chinese now than later. They will forgive and forget before mobilizing more serious national anti-Apple campaign. Now, Cook earned the respect from Chinese and it is a smart Chinese way.

As someone who has done business in China, Tim Cook did the right thing to apologise and give face to the Chinese. There was no other way out for Apple. Apologise even if you didn't do anything wrong, even if you aren't really sorry because someone wanted to make a point to Apple or to the USA and they picked on Apple to do so.
