Verizon's (VZ) CEO predicts a "third ecosystem" will emerge in the next 12 months to challenge Android (GOOG) and iOS (AAPL), given carrier interest in seeing one. Of the 3 possibilities he mentions - Samsung's Bada, Windows Phone (MSFT), and Research In Motion's (RIMM) QNX - Windows Phone appears to have the best shot, given the breadth of its support.

    Bada is an extreme long shot in my own opinion, I suspect that Bada is being developed for deployment on low margin developing market hardware where Samsung is likely taking Nokia marketshare, but not so much for the high margin western markets.

     

    I think Windows Phone has an outstanding chance at becoming a third ecosystem since MSFT is finally integrating its operations into a cohesive, comprehensible platform in emulation of Apple.

     

    QNX, even though it exists and has existed as a desktop OS, doesn't have the 'ecosystem' of the MSFT, AAPL, and GOOG products.
