Macy's (M +1.8%) says it plans to increase holiday hiring by 4%, turning analysts' forecast for sluggish seasonal hiring on its head. Most of the positions are only part-time, but the move has helped lift slouching sentiment in the retail sector. Gainers: JCP +2.2%, DDS 1.5%, SSI +2.8%.

    Here we are looking in the rear view mirror again. History also tells us we often get strong 4th quarters and 1st quarters. Time will tell.
