First Solar (FSLR +5.6%) is shooting higher as its analyst day presentations are made (webcast); the solar giant has struck an upbeat tone about demand and long-term margins thus far. Ahead of the presentations, First Solar announced it had developed a CdTe thin-film solar module with a 16.1% efficiency in lab tests; that's soundly above a prior record of 14.4%, and (assuming eventual production) narrows the historical efficiency edge held by silicon modules. First Solar has also rolled out new Series 3 modules, and raised its efficiency targets for 2015 and 2017.

All they have done is state that they are not competitive with poly-si and did some smoke and mirrors that they will be [right] in 2016.

The tidbit I like is the lack of suitable large plant locations due to need to be near existing power lines. Thus industry is constrained until new transmission lines are built. Who will build them?

It's about the here and now - and now they cannot compete as those planning utility scale plants are doing the economics and FLSR is not the preferred route.

The future is just that, the future and a lot of 5-year plans get trashed as something material may change.

The theoretical voodoo part is over - cannot wait until after lunch. You cannot fool the analysts who certainly know which is the better technology NOW.

Their argument that poly-si prices are a cost concern is total BS as the large poly-si panel makers are vertically integrated and make their own ingots and wafers.
Spot prices for those who need to buy ingots and wafers is not relevant.

(FSLR) been using CdTe for years.
Add N and you get a full spectrum solar cell.
