Market recap: The Dow notched a new record close and the S&P 500 fell just two points shy of its own highs, as investors eyed the start of earnings season and firm economic readings from overseas. Energy and materials were top performers, drawing support from Chinese inflation that slowed more than expected. Gold settled at its highest level in more than a week; crude oil rose on global supply concerns.

    I am an individual investor over the last 30 years.
    And have not done badly so far.
    I do own basic metal stocks and they have not that well.
