Retail watch: Due to the timing of Easter and a slow start to the spring selling season a two-month snapshot of sales covering March and April is appropriate before drawing major conclusions, according to analysts. Retailers looking for a March surge in home and garden (HD, LOW, TGT, WMT) spending and spring clothing purchases expect April to make up some of the slack. Of the 14 retailers reporting March numbers today, comparable-store sales averaged a 0.6% gain with Costco (COST) and Ross Stores (ROST) standing out as outperformers.

There are so many problems in retail. Most are corporate issues and bad decision making. For example: One big box store in many markets has a really old POS and the customers are fed up with constantly new inexperienced cashiers, using an antiquated POS, as well as credit card scanners that are too worn out to accept their magnetic card stripe info and finalize their purchases. Then there's not enough sales people after 6 pm and numerous other issues.

Corporations are out-of-touch with their customer's complaints that they make to the people of the sales floor. Most customers will not take the time to write to the corporate offices and store manager. Then that store manager is likely not to pass the info on for fear their store will be judged as poorly managed. The only people who are willing to tell the truth are on the floors working.

Those people, who talk directly with the customers daily are the last people the CEOs, COOs and BODs want to hear from.

Costco and Amazon will rule the retail space and the others will be for 'showcasing' if this style of management keeps up.
