Though Apple (AAPL -2.8%) didn't announce a new, low-cost iPhone, as some expected, the company has decided to keep the iPhone 3GS around, and cut its price so that U.S. carriers can offer it for free with a contract. Whether a free 3GS will be enough to counter booming sales of mid-range Android (GOOG) phones remains to be seen. (more)
