Analysts at Piper Jaffray, R.W. Baird, and Ticonderoga give their approval to the iPhone 4S, believing the device will keep Apple's (AAPL) smartphone momentum going even if some are underwhelmed. But Henry Blodget is less sanguine, arguing the ~50% of iPhone owners who use an iPhone 4 have little motivation to upgrade.

The iphone 4 users haven't completed their 2 year contracts yet. seems to me that this upgrade is for the 3G and 3GS customers...and unsatisfied Android users (based on the retention information, there must be a large number out there). 3G and 3GS users are getting the iphone 4 upgrades (video, retinal display, speed, etc.) and the iphone 4S upgrades. It was a given that there would not be 4G speed available with this release. Other than that, the disappointment is thinner phone with a slightly larger screen - how important are those vs. what's inside and the way cool Siri functionality?

Why blow the pent up demand in China on an iPhone 5? They can get as many sales of a 4S there as they would a 5, especially since they can keep the price low and also meet demand. Then get more when the iPhone 5 comes out next Spring.

Why would anyone listen to anything Blodgett says. He lost his credibility years ago. He has the personal value system of a slug.
