In it's conference call earlier, UnitedHealth (UNH -3.5%) CEO Stephen Hemsley reiterates its cautious stance on stated-based insurance exchanges, saying the company hasn't changed its view about selling insurance over exchanges set to open later this year under the health-care overhaul law. "We will be very selective in where we participate and do not believe the exchanges will be a significant factor for us," Hemsley noted. (Webcast).

Translation, if they bid to get into the exchanges (where benefit specific coverage is contracted), they can't make the enormous profits they do now. In the meantime, they will continue to screw us by selling to companies (who get government tax write offs) for employee insurance. I hope that will change, because if the exchanges have great coverage and lower premiums, employees will abandon the company plans (and thus, have portable plans when they change jobs or are laid off; many are employed right now and don't quit for greener pastures because of health insurance). I.e., they don't really have "choice" right now, only choice among what the company offers.

Actually, the company said it sees exchanges as a growth area down the road, but it is going to start slow, so there will not be a material impact in '14.

I agree the current system of going through your employer for health insurance (necessitated by the tax structure) limits choice and is not a great system.

Clueless! You can get a UHC policy right now if you meet their criteria and are willing to pay for it. The price will not be lower in the exchanges. UHC knows what they are doing!
