Apple (AAPL) has won the latest round in the global IP wars, with the International Trade Commission ruling that the company did not breach a Motorola (GOOG) patent for a sensor to prevent a user's head from activating the touch screen. The patent was the last one left in a case that originally involved six patents. Two were terminated and three were found not to have been violated. Had Apple lost the case, the ITC could have banned the import of iPhone 4 devices into the U.S.

I am just sad to see all the law suits among all the tech companies.
    It is bad for everyone
The PC industry would not have grow that much and supported so many companies and employees if IBM did what Apple is doing

Nokia started the patent wars in 2009.

You don't think the smartphone industry has grown much since 2009. That's an interesting perspective.

In 2006, there were 50 million smartphones that were shippe; in 2009 there were around 200 million smartphones shipped. Today there are over 1 billion smartphones in use. Do you consider that slow growth?

The lawsuit to which this article refers was started by Motorola, not Apple.

HAHA, Maybe you should read the article again. It was Google that sued AAPL over 6 alleged patent infringements. And, I don't think there is anything wrong with a company protecting what is theirs or attempting to protect what they perceive is theirs.

I suppose you are part of the cavalcade that believes ALL news casts AAPL in a bad light.

I'm replying to haha's post and I've deduced that haha is referring to the entire set of smartphone patent wars, not just this piddly set of 6 patents. Do you see where he says "all the law suits among all the tech companies" I have no problem with haha making some general comment about the patent wars. But if he's going to make one, he should be able to back it up with some evidence that it's true.

It's been bantered about for quite a while that these patent wars are stifling innovation and market growth. Google trumpets that line the most. But what evidence is there that it has been stifled in any way.

The real thug is Samsung. They're doing everything they can to rip off and injure Apple. It's in their DNA; did it several times to Japanese memory companies and are operating with a convicted felon as CEO.

Yes Samsung is a thug run by a thug. It's Chairman of the Board, Mr. Le, is a convicted felon. They have recently been caught paying students to post on boards such as this trash talk about their Android competitor HTC. They have been found by a court of law to have infringed over and over again. I could go on but it is amazing to me that any American would buy a cheap knock off plastic Korean phone while there is an American company like Apple that makes as good if not better phone than Samsung.

    Blu,

Samsung makes components for Apple SO that they can still. It's a strategy they have used in the past with RIMM etc. They aim to copy their competitors and then sell at lower margin and cheaper until that company loses profit. They haven't always been successful (not with AAPL).

Samsung offers nothing to the smartphone battle. Apple is the clear leader but I feel that Android, Microsoft, etc are at least contributing to the market.

Bluismycat, I know this must be a stretch for your feeble brain, but companies like AAPL can copyright and patent applications and when other companies that make components or don't make components for AAPL products copy the patented ideas or apps etc. the courts will hear these law suits. Geese in what country is your citizenship? Samsung has already lost several of these law suits brought by AAPL against them.

I wonder how many paid student shills for Samsung are on here trashing the HTC.

    http://bit.ly/ZKoVoD

It’s a bit hard to believe a company of Samsung’s stature would go to such lengths, but the Samsung Taiwan Facebook page actually came out and owned up to it, issuing an apology and admitting that this shouldn’t have happened. As such, the company assured everyone that it would cease this type of marketing immediately. The news came out as TaiwanSamsungLeaks obtained documents that proved the company partook in such acts.

This prompted the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission to launch an investigation which could lead to a penalty of up to $835,000 for Samsung. This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve heard of Samsung taking special interest in trying to beat HTC.

I wonder how many Samsung paid shills there are trashing Apple. I find it hard to believe that they would pay someone to trash HTC and not pay someone to trash Apple. They just got caught with HTC.

Apple needs a cheap knock-off company to show how good Apple products are.

Samsung won't continue to exist if North Korea takes over.
