GE announces plans to build a $600M facility in Colorado to manufacture thin-film solar panels, with commercial products shipping in 2013. The plant, which represents GE's re-entry into large-scale solar manufacturing after a long hiatus, could represent serious competition for thin-film leader First Solar (FSLR -1.1%).

Why doesn't GE buy the failed ones the Govt. currently has or going into bankruptcy forthwith..... pennies for them on the Obama wasted dollars.

Or it could mean that we're finally taking solar seriously, and FSLR, et al, might start to generate some returns along with juice. All I need is a 100% gain and my FSLR position will be at zero!

Competition is good! Government should however, not compete but should regulate.

This is a great news, if it wasn't for the fact that the CdTe modules contain significant amount of the toxic, carcinogenic heavy metal cadmium. So how "clean" and "green" is this technology? And when was it proven reliable or safe for long term, large scale desert operation, if it has been on the market only 5-6 years?
