Barnes & Noble (BKS) gains 1.2% in premarket trading after it opens up Nook products to Google Play and in the process exponentially increases the number of apps available to users. The company is already pushing the development hard on its website as a selling feature. The combination of a friendly relationship with Google on top of the $300M Microsoft plowed into Nook Media gives B&N some nice friends to have as it looks to potentially re-invent itself in the future.

Potentially repeats itself and might be a little bit redundant to say that over and over again maybe

As a 47 year veteran in the book retail and wholesale business, this seems like a worthwhile band wagon to jump onto. If Bezos weren't so propelled by his own ego, he might have thought of this first. Since Amz doesn't make any money from Kindle (and loses on some) why wouldn't Amz want to open their ebook business to include customers who use any variety of devices.

A lesson from the history of technology:
Photo copy machines used to be called Xerox machines
Personal computers used to be called IBM-PCs
Ereader devices used to be called Kindles

In each case consumers don't care about the brand of the device or who the vendor is; they want the technology at a 'reasonable' price.

Personally, I think that consumer ebooks are a 'flash in the pan' and the future of ebooks is k-12 and college textbooks, most of which will be utilized in the near future on IPad devices.
