Steven Donziger suffers another setback in his feud with Chevron (CVX) as his lawyer John Keker quits, saying Donziger owes him some $1.4M in unpaid legal fees. CVX is suing Donziger for allegedly creating a story about polluted rainforests and poisoned Ecuadorian villagers in an effort to extract a multibillion dollar settlement from the energy giant. Last month, the consulting firm whose supposedly independent research was the basis for Donziger's claim, disavowed its own report after CVX sued it for racketeering. CVX "can afford to litigate this case until hell freezes over," Keker says, "but Donziger can't."

My understanding of this case is it was a scam from day one.

Most of these cases involving alleged environmental pollution in largely uninhabited areas are scams.

The Chavez-Lite semi-dictator Correa is behind all these bogus claims.

Smurf, I think it's actually some US attorneys who made the lawsuit suggestion and found a receptive audience in Ecuador. Someone got one of the plaintiffs attorneys on tape admitting the scam. I watched it a while back.

Here's the strangest part of all, it's my understanding that Texaco/Chevron made good on their responsibilities. However, since Ecuador was nationalizing assets, the final deal was that Ecuador would be responsible for cleanup around the areas they were taking over and were still productive. So, they pulled a fast one to nationalize, and now are reneging on the deal to clean up their own mess. Don't ya just love these leftists?
