A blogger who has been an accurate source for Microsoft (MSFT) leaks in the past claims the next Xbox will run on a modified version of Windows 9; feature an ARM-based (ARMH) CPU (the Xbox 360 uses an IBM PowerPC chip); and be cheaper and smaller than the 360, with the goal of driving further Kinect adoption.

Sure, why note? Microsoft cares little about backward compatibility, having seen ongoing demand for new systems and new games which obsolete old ones. If this were a true compute platform, there would be an uproar. But all the gamers will happily junk their 360s for the new thing and buy loads of new software without blinking an eye. Eventually MS will be hurt by this obsolescence strategy, as it is gouging its customer base over and over.
