  • A foreign solution: Grant resident status to immigrants who buy surplus U.S. houses. "This makes more sense than the president's $275B housing bailout plan, which Americans greeted with a Bronx cheer."

Has to be one of the most practical, and original, solutions I've heard!

A good idea indeed, but good luck getting this past the xenophobic public.

Guess the author never visited Florida where a lot of the housing that is currenlty going under was purchased by legal and illegal immigrants. How about just granting a tax abatement instead of giving away the cow? U.S. citizenship should not be for sale!

No way .... what do you do with them when this housing mess is solved and economy gets to normal!! You will be setting up for another bubble. Think long term solutions. No idiotic quick fixes ...

I agree with not giving away citizenship like we are having a going out of business sale. But we could grant a 5year work visa and not charge them for it like we do now. Or maybe even start the process toward citizenship and either cut or waive the fee which is over 5k if I remember correctly. No matter what, you can't just give away citizenship.

My understanding is that we're not talking about citizenship - just resident status. TaurusTrader does make a good point, though.

I wrote about it more than a year ago in my blog: muddlinginvestor.blogs...

You don't need to invent new Green Card provisions. Just speed up application process. There are more than a million people in the pipeline right now, give them Green Cards faster, most of them will buy houses (I did, right after I received mine).

    Eli ...
Resident status does lead to citizenship .... Foreigners need to get their greeencard (residentship) first .... be a good resident for 3 or 5 years, depending on how they get their greencard, to be eligible for citizenship.
