Starting place, create a new company for the broad purpose of developing a search product. Why? Because it's not going to happen inside of MS. Next, find out what is good and what is bad about Goggle. Two places to start, 1 - not all information is accurate, 2 - the value of information ages. Easy filters are a key. Finally, search and browsing are interrelated. Goggle is not tied to a specific browser. I suspect designing a new browser that blows the socks off everything else out there and integrating this new search capability with features of that browser is one key to challenging Goggle. I think browsers could make a good front-end interface for the OS itself. In the end, the new start-up company, built correctly, replaces the old tired one.
clusty do that you can search and browse at the same time.

Here is something to watch for in the IMMEDIATE future. Unfortunately, not a publically traded company..myEZtv. They have, somehow, beat the bandwith problem! It is where it will all come together. Your TV, your computer, etc. MSFT's business model is going to be obsolete. Forget Netflix, Blockbuster, cable and satellite TV. All obsolete. Your TV becomes a six screen and HD. All you will need is an internet connection. It is going to revolutionize content delievery. Private placement investors? Kelsey Grammer, Stalonne, Streisand, Kenny G, Shaq O'Niel, Fity Cent, etc...Dislosure: private placement investor.
Henry articulated succinctly what some of us had been ranting about MSFT for a long while. I would attribute the issue to a matter of leadership and vision, or lack thereof.
Obviously if you are in charge of such a large behemoth bureaucracy, particularly when you were one of the original anointed bunch, you wouldn't quite be able to see things objectively from the inside.
The chorus of outsiders who are yelling and screaming, pulling their hair obviously had not been heard, or they were heard but suppressed. Why? For those on the inside, it is a norm to be just to refraining from rocking the boat, not to upsetting that Apple Cart.
It is a real charade to watch MSFT still pretending that they think they are up in Cloud Nine, looking down below condescendingly upon its customers.
