Microsoft (MSFT) saw its U.S. search share jump to 11.1% from 9.1% in the week following the public release of Bing, comScore says. Tire kicking, or is Microsoft on to something?
Somebody needs to take google down a notch or two. Googles fascination with aiding and abetting repression in China, coupled with Microsoft's need to grow in areas other than OS makes for an interesting fight. Couple that with Google's access to gangster govt and I see some horse's losing their heads.......
I've been tinkering with with Bing and I have to say I think it is a legitimate contender to Google. I particularly like the way the image search is designed and the mouse fly-over to play video clips, etc.
Bing has come a long way versus Live Search; its results are very good, even facing Google. Of course, I still won't switch over for regular searches, but that's because Bing doesn't mark sponsored links as such.
Either they don't mark them, or they do still screw up badly at times. Bizrate should never be the top relevant link. ("Hard drive comparison")

Microsoft is a one trick pony - Windows is their entire business. Everything else comes from Windows, server software, office software, email software, etc.
Zune is proof Microsoft can't compete on a level playing field, the Xbox is proof that Microsoft can only compete by selling at a loss a heavily subsidized product.
How anyone who knows Bill Gates and his Empire of inept could think that they could build a search engine is beyond reason.
Bing,Zune, Microsoft the hallmark of stupid names for bad products.
I've switched over to bing, virtually no difference in relevance with google from my experimentation, the interface is more elegant, snappy and useful. I've a feeling Microsoft got this one off to a good start, finally. Once it latches on softy is a formidable competitor. While it may not make a dent in google at the moment, it will start making google run for its money 2-3 years down the road by commodotizing he ad market - now, if only they could focus and execute!
Sorry Jimbo - but I think both Zune and Xbox are well-designed products. For a long time, Mac had negligible market share to Windows - but Mac was still considered to be a well-designed product. It had a niche.
Zune is the same way. Microsoft faces the IPod juggernaut - but it has a dedicated set of devotees (including me) who think it is better designed than the IPod.
Xbox - has made some innovative moves recently (Project Natal, etc)
All in all, Microsoft has been a Windows/Office shop for a long time, but Zune/Xbox is, I believe, a credit-worthy effort in moving away from being a one-trick pony.

How much bottom line revenue does zune/xbox generate for Microsoft? How much of a fraction of their software sales does this represent? The problem with Microsoft is they made/make all their money off of licensing - write software once - sell multiple times using variants/upgrades. Market saturation has been achieved, the market has found their new offering (Vista/office2007) lackluster, the upgrade train is derailed.
Lacking any major improvements to induce current users to upgrade, there business model will fail. I see layoffs ahead.
