They recd the clunker deals because Chrysler does not have any fuel efficient vehicles and the gov cancelled Pontiac which had half of GM's fuel efficient vehicles.
Because what people say they do or will do seldom matches what they actually do. They are far more likely to give a politically correct or "socially acceptable" answer than what their real opinion is.
We see that all the time in the solar industry, where the "greenies" talk but don't buy.
Defining whether a car is American or foreign is much more nuanced than simply looking at the flag flying over the corporate headquarters of its maker, due to the global nature of the supply chains in the industry, not to mention the global nature of the shareholders and bondholders in these enterprises.
There are Toyotas that by most reasonable definitions (% of parts content, % of labor content) are more American than some "American" cars.
The political / country flags over the HQ's these days really are more representative of the system of management / corporate culture than anything else as a result.
Instead of taking a more nuanced view, when most people say "buy American cars" what they REALLY mean is "buy a car assembled by a UAW worker in a legacy midwest plant with an American corporation's logo on the side" -- simplistic and wrong.
I think the opposite. I WILL NOT buy american since Obama (whom I voted for) just basically gave our tax $s to prop up crap companies, in addition to wiping out bondholders while hooking up the corrupt unions who helped him get into office. I know all politicians do it but we should be bashing Obama for this just like everyone bashed Bush for benefits extended to Defense Contractors and Oil companies.
Just because a car is assembled here by a foriegn maker does not make it an American car. Assembly labor is a small percentage of overall value.
What about the source of the major, expensive components? What about engineering, marketing, distribution and profits?
The fact is is the press praises the foreign makers as the only ones with fuel efficient cars. If people informed themselves they would know this is simply not true.
Anybody see the recent Chevy commercials with Howie Long?
He sites only a few of the examples.
Bottom line, people are ignorant.
Just look at our government elected into power as evidence.
