This speech is probably not the original speech he intended to give.
The issue isn't the speech; its his creepy every-day-on-TV appearances, far-left appointments, and continuous dissembling about issues. About one-half of the population don't trust him, and don't want him inserting himself into their kids' lives. The original planned curriculum, complete with "write a letter to yourself on how you can serve President Obama" didn't help either, with its similarity to old style Communist self-criticism sessions.
The words in the speech as released are harmless. But, it is a mistake to look only at them and ask what the fuss was.
It's the precedent of bringing politics into classrooms that could open a can of worms. All organizations know that "You've got to catch 'em young....."
If you're worried about the kids, then do something worthwhile like lobby to have no child left behind reversed! That law has done immense damage to our kids, so why no protest on that? Spend your time changing things that actually matter.
I have enough control in the education of my children that no politician's errant remarks are going to damage them.
Mike Rozeff's 11 points are baseless. He doesnt back up any of his points with logic. It's just personal opinion and rambling.
Yes, what is the fuss? Other presidents have addressed the kids, so have governors, senators, mayors and countless politicians at the local level. Our kids idolize sports figures that have absolutely no redeeming value. So?
I am no fan of Obama but I really dont feel threatened at all for him to tell my kids to stay in school. I dont drink the Kool-aid but choose to think for myself and develop my own opinions, not regurgitate others designed for me.
This grass roots objection is just more partisan tomfoolery designed to distract us from the two party system raping our country, which has been going on since Roosevelt. Just as with the contrived stock market rally, you're being played my friend.
There is nothing political in this speech, if Bush had given it we would all be applauding his wisdom. The racists and wingnuts are jumping at shadows. You are not fooling anyone but yourselves.
[And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little longer this morning.]
Oh, please please President 0bama, show me that Government TEAT I can suck on from cradle to grave.
I can't even find it, Mr President. Please, SHOW ME THE TEAT.
Reagan gave the same kind of speech in 1985. Bush 41 gave the same kind of speech in 1991. Notice something??? Reagan was well into his 4th year in office. Bush well into his second year.
Obama is still in campaign mode because, let's face it, he campaigns better than he governs.
I see nothing objectionable in Obama's speech, although the line near the end about how "I" (Obama) am working to fix your schools and give you books and computers etc etc is a bit in keeping with his inflated ego. The criticism I have is in the suggested curriculum the Dept of Education is supplying along with this speech. That's where a lot of conservatives have problems with the whole thing. It tends to focus on service to Obama rather than an obligation to the nation itself.
The speech is, or seems, innocuous. It was the over-reaching by DOE, added to the worshipful nonsense that surrounded it that got people's dander up. The "I will serve Obama" video is absurd, political garbage, and has/had no place in the whole thing.
If they weren't trying to take over the rest of the nation, maybe folks wouldn't be so skeptical about their protestations of innocence.
Tragically, the level of political discourse in this country has deteriorated significantly. Everyone's motives are suspect, angry confrontation is the order of the day. Self-serving politicians and the ratings driven media promote this environment because the average Joe responds to it. I leave it to the reader to decide where the average Joe's political affiations lie.
Of course you refuse the government teat of your military service pension and PX privileges - right?

Mr Cool has tragically proven UNCOOL. The only truckers for "keep truickin" are union thugs thug that will kill grandma before the union benefits and PENSIONS are lost.
Look to California: The cops and the state police and teachers are BLEEDING the taxpayer dry.

People that stand the distinct possibility of catching a bullet or worse for Uncle Sam have EARNED their military service pension. "I" is found 56 times in the The Glorious Leaders indoctrination, oops I mean speech.
I'm surprised by the comments on this, but being a Canadian who admires Americans, I'll not interfere in your internal politics!! One comment is that I always found the schools in Canada full of politics - most of my teachers were in the 20's and 30's and were very good at spreading their beliefs. I assume the same in US of A. Maybe the issue is the introduction of the 'other sides view' into the classroom?

You little mean puke.
I have donated ALL of my military privileges to those who are in need. I have never made one cent on my service but I have killed many in defense of this country.
Call me out for murder, not greed, you little insignificant sh*t.
As a foreigner I won't comment on the fuss about in classroom politics. As a former student, I'm surprised that people believe there is no politics in school. I can remember many teachers in their 20's and 30's with their 70's revolutionary ideas. Maybe its not politics that is the issue but in the inclusion 'of the other sides voice'.
