    • Following a 2013 in which the number of natural and man-made disasters fell by half, reinsurers could be hit with up to a 25% decline in premium revenue this year, according to broker Willis Re.
    • Combining with the lack of catastrophes is a market in oversupply as pension funds and hedge funds (like GLRE and TPRE) rush into the business - a $50B increase in industry capital, says Willis CEO John Cavanagh.
    • U.S. property casualty reinsurance faces the biggest hit - 10-25% - while European premiums could fall 10-15%.
    • Hannover Re (HVRRY) last week said it expected premiums to fall this year, fueling concern about a price war with competitors like Swiss Re (SSREY) and Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B).
    • Among U.S. reinsurers: ACE, XL, PRE, RE, RNR.

    • The property-casualty insurance cycle is "petering out," says the team, noting "outright softening" in reinsurance pricing, a leveling out in commercial-insurance price gains, decelerating personal line pricing, and flat auto-insurance prices (home-insurance prices remain on the rise).
    • Still, Sandler's Q3 estimates remain above consensus, mostly because of the lack of catastrophe losses, and the firm has Buy ratings on ACE, AIG, ALL, TRV, and XL.
    • American Financial (AFG -0.7%) is downgraded to Hold - a valuation call after a big run has the stock near Sandler's $58 price target.
    • Price targets on ProAssurance (PRA -1.3%) and State Auto Financial (STFC -0.5%) are cut $2 to $47 and $1 to $20, respectively.

    • Municipal bond mutual funds and ETFs reported $1.3B in investor withdrawals in the week ended Wednesday, according to Lipper, Over the 15 consecutive weeks of outflows, the funds have lost $23.7B.
    • The rout in muni prices smells like opportunity to some, including insurer ACE limited, which boosted its muni holdings by 15% in the first half of the year. Smaller investors like what they see too, as transactions of $100K or less accounted for 85% of muni trades in July and August - the highest proportion since at least 2006.
    • "The combination of being able to lock in the higher yields for such a long period of time, which matches our liabilities, makes it very attractive," CNA Financial's SVP James Anderson, also boosting holdings of muni paper.

Sandler O'Neill is 2-handed on P-C insurers, maintaining buys on ACE, AFG, AIG, ALL, PRA, TRV, UFCS, and XL even as it says caution is warranted. Among the reasons are consensus not accounting for high catastrophe losses in Q2, weak reinsurance pricing, and poor investment returns (despite the recent rise in rates).

The pressure on reinsurance pricing isn't set to dissipate anytime soon, says Credit Suisse, after talking with 9 of the firms this week. Faring best will be those with higher exposure to Florida (say ACE) - where price pressure will ease somewhat - as opposed to those with more of a national presence (say RNR). Rated Outperform are Aspen (AHL) - with less than 25% of the portfolio exposed to industry headwinds - and Validus (VR) - trading near book despite a more diverse revenue line.
