    • Crude oil is down 6% as unsettled trading continues around the commodity, but the larger story could be the confidence shown in the sector by investors just ahead of a slew of traffic reports and guidance updates from carriers.

    • Just a few days after it lost its chief operating officer, Allegiant Air (ALGT -3.6%) has named his replacement along with a management restructuring.
    • Jude Bricker, the company's senior VP of planning, will take over the role of COO and oversee Flight Operations, Maintenance and Safety. He'll continue to lead the network and fleet strategy.
    • CFO Scott Sheldon gets an expanded role in the changes, taking responsibility for Inflight and Operation Control Center, which will include front-line customer-facing employees.
    • The firm had said it would use the resignation of Steve Harfst to "refocus on operational needs and areas for improvement."

    • Airline fares fell 1.1% M/M in December as promotional activity increased in key markets, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
    • The average fare in December was 3.0% lower than the level from a year ago on an unadjusted basis.
    • There's been reports from industry watchers that fares have moved lower in January as carriers scrap for market share.

    • The read on airline fares could calm some anxiety over PRASM forecasts from key carriers. It's also worth noting again that fuel costs are down 40% to 50% for carriers on the year-over-year comparison.
