    Overstock.com (OSTK), which fell yesterday on Amazon's (AMZN) Q3 report, is down 5.1% after reporting Q3 results. Revenue of $239.7M (-2% Y/Y) and EPS of -$0.33 missed consensus by $16.9M and $0.13, and suggest a continued loss of share in the U.S. retail e-commerce market, which is still growing at a healthy clip.

    A silver lining to Amazon's (AMZN -11.1%) Q3 report might be found in the 70% Y/Y growth posted for "Other" revenues, which includes Amazon's web services business (AWS). If a UBS projection that AWS will account for 3/4 of 2011 "Other" sales holds, AWS might pull in over $1B in revenue this year, well above UBS' $751M August forecast. (previously) (transcript)

Starting with OPEN and RIMM, continuing through to GMCR, FSLR, and NFLX, and now AMZN. We know how the sequels go, so those remaining - AAPL, CMG, PCLN - don't go outside to check on that odd noise.

    Amazon's (AMZN -11.8%) soft Q3 report (I, II) is taking a toll on rivals eBay (EBAY -2.2%), Barnes & Noble (BKS -2.2%), and Overstock.com (OSTK -1.7%). In B&N's case, Amazon's remarks about boosting Kindle Fire production could also be a factor. (more) (transcript)

    Amazon (AMZN -11.5%) would seem to be the latest victim of the Apple (AAPL) machine, with Q3’s 42% EPS miss expected to be followed by Q4 losses on the Kindle Fire alone of as much as $200M, as it subsidizes the Fire anywhere from $10 to $100. But AMZN has no choice: "The traditional media business they have would wilt on the vine without [the] transition to digital."

    Best Buy (BBY), Wal-Mart (WMT) Staples (SPLS) and other retailers, which are counting on tablets and e-readers to boost Christmas sales, could miss out if a lot of consumers opt to buy directly from the manufacturers. Piper Jaffray found that 71% of shoppers interested in a Fire planned to buy it via Amazon (AMZN).

    Why are Amazon's (AMZN -10.3%) operating income and margins diving? Ramping Kindle production is one factor (the devices are loss leaders), but the company's long-term investments are a bigger one. As Erick Schonfeld notes, Amazon's Q3 spending on "technology and content" rose 74% Y/Y, and its spending on "fixed assets" doubled. (transcript)

    The long thesis for Amazon.com (AMZN) remains intact despite yesterday's margin concerns, Citi says, citing: 1) AMZN's "market-share-vacuuming position of strength." 2) Its double-double market opportunity in its retail biz. 3) Benefits from Net evolution (mobile, cloud, local). 4) Its track record of succeeding through investment cycles.

    With operating income of $79M on sales of $10.9B, Amazon (AMZN) has a profit margin of 0.7% vs. 3.5% a year ago. "At what point do profits matter more than revenue growth," asks a trader. Amazon will have 1% operating margins on the Kindle Fire and that will improve their overall number. Shares -14% AH.
