Swedish replaces interim CEO John Cannon, who will maintain his old job as EVP of Legal & Public Affairs. Cannon became interim CEO following the August departure of Angela Brady. (PR)

    WellPoint (WLP) is taking on IBM's (IBM) Watson supercomputer as a virtual assistant that will answer medical questions from doctors, researchers, medical centers and insurance carriers. It's part of IBM's plan to make money out of Watson, which gained fame after beating humans in "Jeopardy!" in 2011, and the IT giant plans to introduce products for the finance sector later this year.

    James Carlson, who led Amerigroup as it became one of the biggest insurers focused on Medicaid, is reportedly among the leading candidates to become the new CEO of WellPoint (WLP) to replace the ousted Angela Braly. Carlson joined WellPoint last month following its $4.9B acquisition of Amerigroup, but his position has yet to be defined, nor has his compensation package been made public.

    S&P announces some changes to its indices: United Natural Foods (UNFI) will replace Amerigroup (AGP) in the S&P MidCap 400, and Ixia (XXIA) will replace United Natural Foods in the S&P SmallCap 600. Wellpoint (WLP) is acquiring AGP in a deal expected to be completed soon. Abiomed (ABMD) is also to be added to the S&P 600, replacing Cascade (CASC) as of the December 21st close of trading. Toyota Industries is acquiring Cascade, which also should be completed soon.

    The way is clear for WellPoint (WLP) to complete its $4.46B acquisition of Amerigroup (AGP) after the DOJ yesterday dropped its antitrust concerns about the deal. Justice had expressed worries about competition in northern Virginia, but WellPoint assuaged those fears by agreeing to sell Amerigroup Virginia.
