A123 Systems (AONE -18.4%) crumbles yet again after announcing Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs has resigned from the company's board, supposedly to focus more on his day job. But it might just be that investors are looking for a reason to sell in light of A123's perilous financial position.

Volatile A123 Systems (AONE +17.2%) rebounds all the way to $0.82 after reaching a deal with China's Ray Power Systems to supply a 2MW grid energy storage system. Though 2MW may not sound like much, Ray Power proclaims the deal will "validate the technical capabilities" of grid storage, and A123 is hopeful it will open up new opportunities in China. Selling energy tech in the country has its risks, as American Superconductor and Maxwell can vouch. (previous)

The company, a developer of lithium-ion batteries for vehicles and other high-power equipment, had already disclosed board resignations and a delisting notice yesterday afternoon. Rival A123 Systems (AONE +1.7%), which has its own cash flow problems, isn't showing any ill effects.

China plans to subsidize the development of pure-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the nation to reduce the nation's dependence on oil and cut emissions. The State Council's public goal of seeing 5M alternative-energy vehicles produced by 2020, blows away previous estimates and sets the prize high for a company able to knock out a technological breakthrough in the industry. It's make-or-break time for A123 Systems (AONE), according to Automotive News' Dustin Walsh. If the hype from the firm is correct over its lithium-ion battery that can deliver 10X the life of traditional lead acid batteries and withstand temperature extremes, then it's a game-changer. But without additional funding or a slew of new contracts, the naysayers may be proven correct. Shares of AONE +9.1% after aides with Obama make positive comments about fuel cell technology.

What short squeezes give to depressed stocks, they often quickly take away. A123 Systems (AONE -17.1%) and First Solar (FSLR -6%) are each returning a big chunk of yesterday's massive gains (I, II). Wunderlich's comments are contributing to A123's decline, while First Solar's drop is partly due to a cautious JPMorgan note that argues yesterday's rally didn't feature "much, if any, structural long buying."

Wunderlich tips off that it expects A123 Systems (AONE) to give back a good portion of yesterday's gains as investors realize that its "breakthrough" lithium ion battery could take years to see production. Analysts with the firm don't pull their punches, calling the new technology the "dime a dozen" variety with very little near-term impact. Shares -5.1% premarket.

Though off the day's highs, A123 Systems (AONE +36.5%) is still posting huge gains on account of its battery tech announcement. Short-covering is likely driving the rally (23.5% of A123's float was shorted as of May 15), as may hopes that the cash-strapped company's breakthrough will allow it to avoid bankruptcy. Technology Review notes A123's tech could both reduce the cost of an electric car battery pack by 10%-20%, and replace lead-acid batteries in conventional cars.
