The PR fiasco that stemmed from reports of Chevy Volts catching fire at a testing center contributed to a 60% M/M decline in Volt sales, to just 603 units, according to GM's (GM +2%) January sales report. Though even before news of the fires emerged, Volt sales were well below expectations. GM's sales report may be pressuring shares of electric car battery maker A123 Systems (AONE -1.2%).

A123 Systems (AONE -3.1%) is selling off in spite off Wunderlich's attempt to put a silver lining on top customer Fisker Automotive's recent production forecast cut. According to Wunderlich, Fisker's cut will actually lower A123's 2012 cash burn, and might even prevent it from having to raise capital this year, since A123 loses money on every battery it sells to Fisker.

While considering A123 Systems (AONE) a "serious competitor" in the electric car battery market, Dougherty's Andrea James notes the company faces serious liquidity issues, and believes it could run out of money by Q2 '13 unless the DOJ floats it a loan. A123, which had $349M in cash on its balance sheet as of Sep. 30 (offset by $204M in debt), has posted negative free cash flow of roughly $420M over the last 12 months.
