FBR Capital considers recent chip deals for Atheros (ATHR) and National Semi (NSM) a "solid start for tech M&A," citing SLAB, ATML, FCS, IRF, MXIM, ADI, LLTC and ISIL as potential takeover targets. Given techs' increasing confidence about the economy and that balance sheets are flush with cash, "more M&A activity could be on the come."

Qualcomm (QCOM +2.1%) CEO Paul Jacobs says the proposed Atheros (ATHR +1.1%) acquisition will take the firm beyond its core cellphone business. He says "we get a set of products, technologies and distribution channels into companies that make devices." These include access point routers, gateways, TVs, Blu-Ray players, and printers.

The deal joining Atheros (ATHR) with Qualcomm (QCOM) is a "natural fit," according to early reviews. It “makes great sense strategically for QCOM as it would provide QCOM with core competencies in PCs, tablets and WiFi, all of which are at an early stage for QCOM," one analysis says. ATHR +1.4% and QCOM +1.7% premarket, a sign that investors see the deal as good for both sides.
