    The IPO backlog is now huge: 161 companies have filed to raise a record $56B. Unlike the tech IPO boom in 2000, many are proven businesses, including GM, Toys 'R' Us, Nielsen and Booz Allen.     Corporate shake-up #1: Barclays (BCS) says Bob Diamond, the head of its I-bank, will become the firm's CEO when current chief John Varley steps down in March 2011.     Barclays (BCS) is reportedly planning to cut hundreds of support jobs at its I-banking division as part of a review of its costs and in response to an investment slowdown. Analysts don't see this as a reversal of the firm's strategic expansion, but shares are taking a hit this morning: -5.3% premarket.

    Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T) have reportedly chosen Salt Lake City, Minneapolis and Austin, Texas, as pilot cities for the "Mercury" smartphone-payments system project - their attempt to crack the dominance of Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) in payments networks. The carriers may work with Discover (DFS) and Barclays (BCS) for processing and management.
