Renren's (RENN +3.2%) spike near the close may be attributable to a Washington Post article speculating that Facebook (FB) is seeking a partner in China. FB has held a range of investment and partnership talks with the country's top internet players, the story says, which could bring the Chinese government on board. But BIDU -1.1% and SINA -1.4% both finished lower.

In spite of their huge gains and steep valuation, Baidu (BIDU) shares still have room to run, claims Piper's Gene Munster. The company is where Google was 6-7 years ago from a growth standpoint, in Munster's view, and the 300K SMEs who advertise on Baidu only make up ~1% of China's total. Meanwhile, SA's Jiang Zhang notes the tremendous success of Baidu's Box Computing platform, which delivers highly contextual search results.

Baidu (BIDU +4.5%) surges following a report from Sina Tech that Apple (AAPL) plans to add Baidu as a search option for Chinese users in a pending iOS update, though Google (GOOG) will remain the default choice. Given Baidu's dominant share of Chinese search, such a move seems like a no-brainer. The report comes shortly after a much-discussed Tim Cook visit to China. (more on Baidu: I, II)

With a 36% share of the Chinese online video market, (YOKU +27.4%) and Tudou (TUDO +156.5%) will tower over #2 (SOHU) and #3 Baidu (BIDU) following their merger, notes Jiang Zhang. Moreover, the tie-up will help the combined company address rising bandwidth and content costs, and allow Youku to enter the Chinese mobile video market. Zhang speculates smaller players such as Ku6 (KUTV +11.9%) could now be acquisition targets for Sohu or Baidu.

Baidu (BIDU -1.5%) sells off a bit following's (YOKU +13.7%) and Tudou's (TUDO +147%) merger announcement. There could be fears the combined company, which will have a YouTube-like dominance of the Chinese online video market, will thwart Baidu's own online video ambitions.
