Shares of Caribou Coffee (CBOU +30%) soar right past $16 which marks the price Joh. A. Bencksier has on the table for the company. The cheerful rally is an indication that at least a few traders are speculating a higher offer could come down the pike. Though Caribou Coffee is the second largest coffee chain behind Starbucks and could add to its retail footprint, the early read on the deal from Starbucks (SBUX +1.6%) investors leans toward indifference.

Coffee consolidation: The buyer of Caribou Coffee (CBOU), Joh. A. Benckiser, already dipped into the sector with a $974M deal to buy Peet's Coffee & Tea last summer. The quick analyst take on the new acquisition is that a Caribou-Peet's consolidation could percolate. Coffee Holdings (JVA) is catching a bid off the news, up 8.1% premarket.

Jefferies weighs in on Caribou Coffee (CBOU -2.2%) after the company guided its estimates for 2012 revenue and profit lower. Though analysts clip their price target on CBOU by $6 to $16 and set lower EPS forecasts for FY12 and FY13, a Buy rating is maintained with K-Cup issues "transitory" and only contributing 15% to the coffee seller's bottom line.

Though Caribou Coffee's (CBOU) Q2 EPS beat estimates, the company is guiding for 2012 sales to be flat (consensus is for 6.9% growth) and EPS to come in at $0.43-$0.46, below a $0.49 consensus. Caribou blames weak sales of K-Cups (GMCR), due to a mixture of channel shifting, new pricing tiers, and "the loss of a significant account." CBOU now -5.9% AH. GMCR -0.8%. (PR)

Caribou Coffee (CBOU +6.1%) goes on a run to hit a ten-week high. Though the broad theme of lower coffee commodity prices is the headliner on CBOU, the company has also been quietly staying aggressive by upgrading its menu and increasing its brand awareness with strategic placements in grocery stores and club stores.

More collateral damage from Starbucks' announcement: In addition to competitive concerns at Panera Bread (PNRA -1.8%) over the SBUX plan to offer more food items, Einstein Noah Restaurant (BAGL -0.3%) and Caribou Coffee (CBOU -1.7%) trade lower on the same worries that a beefed-up Starbucks menu could grab market share.

Shares of Caribou Coffee (CBOU -4.7%) fall despite seeing an upgrade to Buy from Hold at Dougherty. While analysts bang the drum that Green Mountain Coffee Roaster's inventory issues aren't necessarily indicative of structural problems at Caribou, investors for the most part have been wary that big names such as Starbucks and Dunkin' Brands pose as competitive threats.

Shares of Caribou Coffee (CBOU) fall 17.9% in early trading after the firm lowers its outlook for revenue and profit in FY12. Behind the pain, it's weak single-cup coffee sales that paint a picture - along with GMCR - that consumers aren't changing their coffee-drinking habits at the pace anticipated. CBOU -30% for the week.

More on Caribou Coffee (CBOU): Q1 EPS comes in line while revenue misses slightly. The company says its single-cup coffee business continues to experience significant growth, but "recent industry trends lead us to believe this business line will experience a moderation in its growth trajectory for the remainder of 2012." As a result, it cuts FY12 guidance, now expecting to earn $0.47 - $0.50 per share on sales growth of about 6% to 8%. Street estimates are for $0.57 per share on 10% sales growth. Shares -7.1% AH.
