    Credit Suisse downgrades Ericsson (ERIC) to Neutral from Outperform, claiming the shares offer "less compelling upside," and there are "more compelling stories elsewhere globally." Last month, Goldman Sachs also downgraded the firm. Premarket, Ericsson is -1.2%.

    The world's most valuable company, Exxon Mobil (XOM +1.9%), gets a run for its money from its number 2 rival, after a rally pushed Apple's (AAPL +2.1%) market cap to more than $300B. But don't expect Apple to overtake Exxon as long as oil prices are high.

    Sprint (S +4.3%) opts not to exercise its right to buy debt from struggling Clearwire (CLWR +0.7%), which is raising money to build out its 4G network. Last month, Clearwire announced a $1.1B-plus debt sale, and Sprint had till Jan. 2 to join. With the recent loss of its chairman, this leaves Clearwire's future even murkier.

    The absence of Apple (AAPL) at CES will be "an elephant in the room." Apple doesn't do trade shows, even if its iPad is the industry's most important new product. In its stead will be rivals like Motorola (MOT) who are expected to field new tablet PCs, and partners like Verizon (VZ), who'll talk up Android (GOOG) phones.

    Companies like Intel (INTC), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), and IBM (IBM) are among the tech companies sitting on big piles of cash very likely to be invested in acquisitions this year. Probable buyouts will be in the areas of cloud computing, clean technology, alternative energy, life sciences, and the internet.

Nasdaq -0.4%. Bonds' short session is getting a lift from position squaring.

Cisco's breadth of products and customers means it's almost "too big to fail." Next year, it "may be a natural pick for institutional, mutual fund, and hedge-fund managers."

    Skype (EBAY) comes clean on last week's eye-blackening service outage. A bug in a version of a Skype Windows (MSFT) client that 50% of users run resulted in a failure for 40% of these subscribers. Skype will do some software and process soul searching to avoid future disaster.

    BTIG initiates coverage of Clearwire's (CLWR) 8.25% exchangeable notes due in 2040 with a Buy, noting they are less volatile than the company's shares. Sprint (S) will probably buy Clearwire in 2011 for at least $15/share to lay hands on its valuable spectrum. Clearwire is +0.7% and Sprint is -0.3%.

    Sales of external storage devices will rise 14% for Q4 2010 from Q4 2009, with growth exceeding 10% in 2011, says Barclays Capital. A survey of 20 storage resellers reinforces this thesis. Most of the resellers also say both NetApp (NTAP -0.7%) and EMC (EMC -0.2%) sales are in line for Q4.
