As expected, the solid earnings reports from Priceline and TripAdvisor, have lit a torch under sector players such as Ctrip (CTRP +1.3%), Expedia (EXPE +2.2%), Travelzoo (TZOO +2.8%), Orbitz (OWW -0.6%), and Kayak (KYAK +3.5%) in early trading. The general theme is the online travel business is stabilizing as it adjusts its model to dialed-down expectations in Europe and Asia.

Ctrip (CTRP +4%) rallies following an upgrade to Buy from Goldman. Among the firm's reasons. The firm thinks price competition is stabilizing, as industry subsidies decline and rival eLong sees its margins plummet. Goldman also touts Ctrip's service quality and dominant share of the business travel market, and considers Chinese online travel firms to be undervalued relative to U.S. peers on a bookings/market cap basis. Ctrip's Q3 results arrive on Nov. 5.

Ctrip.com (CTRP -3.3%) slumps to a three-year low as Chinese stocks trade weak. Sentiment on the name has also been swayed by last week's strong Q2 report from Expedia that highlighted Ctrip's more moderate growth track.

Ctrip.com (CTRP) +3.8% AH after announcing a $300M stock buyback program, good for repurchasing 12.7% of outstanding shares at current levels. Ctrip says it will fund the buyback with available cash, but adds some of the cash will come from dividends its receives from its Chinese subsidiaries. Those dividends are subject to a 5% tax, which will hurt the company's EPS by $0.10. Ctrip shares have fallen ~40% from early March levels. (previous)

Chinese travel bookings site Ctrip.com (CTRP -7.2%) dives on a downgrade to Hold from Mirae, which thinks a decision by rival Qunar (majority-owned by BIDU) to sell hotel room inventory held by wholesalers online could pose a threat to Ctrip's business. Mirae adds weakening economic conditions are driving wholesalers to sell more of their inventory online, and that Ctrip will struggle to cope.

Online travel stocks take a beating, with Expedia (EXPE -4.2%), Priceline.com (PCLN -1.9%, Orbitz Worldwide (OWW -8.7%), and Tripadvisor (TRIP -4.4%) all underperforming market indexes. Though shares of Ctrip.com (CTRP +8.1%) are downright giddy following a pair of analyst upgrades, the broader theme from the analyst coverage paints a picture of intense competition and shrinking margins in the sector.
