    • Minnesota state senators vote 48-18 in favor of legalizing physician-prescribed medical marijuana. The bill will permit up to 55 dispensing centers around the state although the health commissioner could approve additional sites.
    • Patients could legally possess up to 2.5 ounces of pot to be ingested in pills, oils or vaporized just shy of combustion. Smoking weed would still be illegal.
    • The bill allows for a research study to assess the effects of medical marijuana in pill or liquid form in patients with severe illnesses.
    • The Senate's version differs from the House's version so more work needs to be done before it passes over the Governor's desk.

    • Shares of Advanced Cannabis Solutions (CANN +44.5%) are up big today in apparent sympathy with CannaVest (CANV +43.7%) after CO cleared the way for the latter's hemp production.
    • Today's turnover is 83K shares versus its daily average of 84K. Retail investors need to be careful here. A large up move without a commensurate rise in volume undermines its validity.

    • The SEC halts trading in Growlife (PHOT) over the accuracy and adequacy of information in the marketplace and over possible manipulative transactions in the stock.
    • The agency's action follows its recent suspension of Advanced Cannabis Solutions (CANN -48%) . Since trading resumed shares are down almost 50% from their early March highs.
    • Another superb example of the Wild West nature of trading in pot stocks is CannaVest (CANV -6.5%). Shares currently trade hands for almost 75% less than they did in early March.
    • Cannabis industry bulls might consider consuming the product to combat the nausea caused by the stomach-churning volatility.

    • CannaVEST Corp. (CANV -21.2%) discloses material errors in its 10-Qs for the first three quarters of 2013. The reports are no longer accurate due to non-GAAP-compliant accounting for the purchase price and price allocation for the PhytoSPHERE Sytems assets. Specifically, the carrying amount of intangible assets and goodwill and the resulting amortization costs and goodwill impairment are not GAAP-compliant due to the allocation method used by management.
    • Also, sales and COGS for the quarter ended March 31, 2013 are wrong and will require restatement.

Medical Marijuana (MJNA.PK +41.1%) surges after issuing a shareholder update and letter to address what it calls "recent blog articles" attacking the company. MJNA provides a lengthy defense of the CannaVest (CANV.OB) deal, recently the subject of sharp criticism from SA contributor Alan Brochstein, and says it will provide details about the transaction in its Q1 filings, due to arrive by May 15. Also, chairman/COO Michelle Sides insists she hasn't sold any shares in the company. Update: Brochstein defends himself in an Instablog.

Medical Marijuana (MJNA.PK -13%) dives after SA contributor Alan Brochstein takes aim at the company's financials once more (previous). Brochstein points out $4.5M of MJNA's Q4 sales came from an installment payment related to a $35M deal with CannaVest (CANV.OB) signed at the end of the quarter, and that CannaVest can make deal payments with its (very illiquid) stock. He also observes MJNA's Q4 sales were revised to $4.69M from a prior $5.19M (and before that, $5.1M) in its recently updated annual report.

Volatile Medical Marijuana (MJNA.PK -20.4%) falls to $0.23 on the pink sheets after SA authors Ashraf Eassa and Panoplos offer bearish takes. Panoplos notes that while MJNA recently valued an inventory sale/licensing deal with CannaVEST (FCLS.OB) at $35M, based on an assigned value of $5 for the CannaVEST shares issued to MJNA, the actual value of the shares could be much lower. Especially since CannaVEST recently disclosed it has "no customers," and that its sole assets consist of the items purchased in its deal with MJNA. MJNA is no stranger to double-digit swings.
