    • Free trade talks between the EU and the U.S. have failed "even though nobody is really admitting it," Germany's economy minister said Sunday, citing a lack of progress on any of the major sections of the long-running negotiations.
    • Both Washington and Brussels have pushed for a deal by the end of the year, despite strong misgivings among some EU member states over the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP.
    • Sigmar Gabriel, who is also Germany's vice chancellor, added that Turkey was unlikely to join the EU during his political career, saying the bloc was not in the position to take in Ankara even if it met all the entry requirements tomorrow.

    • The German Ifo Institute's business-climate index has dropped to 106.2 in August from 108.3 in July and missed consensus for a rise to 108.5.
    • The current-situation reading fell to 112.8 from 114.8 and undershot forecasts of 114.9, while the expectations print dropped to 100.1 from 102.1 and missed estimates of 102.5.

    • ECB policy makers concluded at their July meeting that the Brexit vote won't derail the eurozone's economic recovery.
    • The central bank's 25-member governing council "came to the conclusion that the base scenario of a continuing economic recovery and gradually rising inflation rates in the eurozone is still intact," the Bundesbank wrote in its monthly report.
    • Germany's economic growth should also continue over the summer, as the "positive expectations of German firms have only dimmed slightly in the wake of the referendum."

    • Business activity in the eurozone did not fall as much as expected in July, despite Brexit jitters and the Bastille Day massacre, as Markit's flash PMI for the region dropped to 52.9 from June's 53.1.
    • Meanwhile, sterling is down 0.8% to $1.3133 after the British economy shrank at its steepest pace since early 2009, with the flash U.K. composite PMI falling to 47.7 from 52.4.
    • "At this level, the survey is signaling a 0.4% contraction of the [U.K.] economy in Q3," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit.

    • The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany, which aims to predict economic developments six months ahead, fell to -6.8 from 19.2 in June. That's the lowest level since November 2012.
