Mix Europe's pullback from the abyss with pent-up capital pouring into the beaten-down materials sector, and you get huge spikes in economically sensitive companies. Alcoa (AA +9%) adds $1B in market cap today, as investors pounce on shares that had shed 34% YTD. Other big winners: DOW +8% despite a disappointing Q3 report, FCX +8.7%, DD +5.5%.

DuPont (DD -1.3%) files a patent-infringement suit against Monsanto (MON -2.4%), alleging it violated a patent for its seed production technique that increases seed corn vigor to improve germination under stress. Monsanto disputes the claim, saying it pertains to defoliating corn plants with Paraquat or Roundup, an approach that isn't used in any of its production fields.

DuPont (DD) looks to sell a polyester-film JV among other interests it owns in ventures, as the company steers towards faster-growing products such as food enzymes and biofuels. Ticonderoga Securities analyst Mark Gulley says the company has made very few divestitures since Ellen Kullman became CEO. "This is probably overdue."
