Apple (AAPL), a major Sharp customer, is probably closely watching Foxconn's attempts to renegotiate its 9.9% investment in the Japanese company after its shares plunged last week following a profit warning and fell another 5.7% today. "Apple needs Sharp," says analyst Alberto Moel. "Sharp’s capacity is large enough that if it were taken offline, it could hurt Apple."

Most iPad2s (AAPL) are produced at Foxconn’s (FXCNY.PK) Shenzhen facility, not the Chengdu plant where Friday's explosion took place, so estimates for a 2.8M-unit hit to production are “too pessimistic,” iSuppli's Dale Ford writes. The impact will be short-term, since there are more than 10 factories at Chengdu and the explosion occurred on the third floor of one of the buildings.

One positive in the recent theft of Apple (AAPL) secrets: such leaks are rare. But the downside is Apple is vulnerable when it depends on faraway contract factories to assemble its designs. But it's also "sad that the U.S. just doesn’t make things anymore."
