Customers have shown surprising patience with Morgan Stanley (MS) CEO James Gorman as he tries to turn around the firm's struggling trading ops. AIG (AIG +1.9%) has reportedly unwound most of its mortgage-related swaps with Goldman Sachs (GS), taking a loss of up to $2B last year as part of the process. The insurer still has swaps with Goldman on $1.3B of CDOs that AIG execs think will do better than current prices reflect.

Fed officials who challenged Friedman's waiver to own stock while serving as NY Fed chairman "were ultimately overruled," they say.

Top global chemical maker BASF (BASFY.PK +1.9%) is reportedly readying a bid for Cognis - a privately held chemical firm owned by Goldman Sachs (GS) and Permira Advisors - that values Cognis around €3B ($4B). The move, BASF's biggest since its $5B takeover of Ciba Holding, would add more natural materials and cut BASF's reliance on Middle East oil and gas.

In its annual report released this morning, Goldman Sachs (GS) denies it bet against clients in the mortgage-derivatives market, saying that its successful bets against residential mortgage-related products only helped the firm lose less money in the collapse. Speculative-grade bonds rated BB are in vogue after trailing the riskiest debt in the record credit-market rally. “BBs have been in an unloved space, too risky for investment-grade investors but not risky enough for high-yield investors,” a Goldman Sachs (GS) strategist says. “That has preserved a lot of value."

Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE) will probably start using a clearinghouse for interest-rate swaps by year's end. The mortgage giants are among the biggest buyers of the swaps, and the move would likely hurt profits at Wall St. banks (like GS and JPM) while boosting business for exchanges (like NDAQ and CME).

Geely's successful bid to buy Volvo from Ford (F) is a bit of an exception in China, coming after earlier Chinese failures to buy Western marques like Saab and Hummer - but then Geely's in a different league, with substantial cash, backed by Goldman Sachs (GS) P-E and taking on a brand that may be easier to turn around.
