    • Infotainment system and connected service provider Harman (NYSE:HAR) is partnering with 3G/4G patent owner and R&D provider InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC) to provide a suite of standards-compliant IoT services.
    • The solution is said to pair InterDigital's oneMPOWER IoT service platform with Harman's "excellence in IoT systems integration and service management." The companies promise the solution "will further facilitate application development, analytics and other data services based on the simple and flexible data environment while ensuring a robust and scalable standards-based solution."
    • The news comes less than a week after Cisco announced it's buying leading IoT service provider Jasper Technologies for $1.4B+. Amazon, IBM, Microsoft, and a slew of other tech giants have also unveiled IoT service offerings, each hoping to profit from a surge in the number of Web-connected embedded devices being deployed by enterprises and service providers.

    • InterDigital (IDCC +4.1%) has struck a royalty-bearing licensing deal with Japanese phone OEM Kyocera. Terms are undisclosed.
    • The 3G/4G patent owner now expects Q4 revenue of $107M-$111M, above prior guidance of $89M-$91M and an $88.4M consensus. $92M-$94M of the revenue is expected to be recurring, and $15M-$17M stemming from past sales. The revision is said to reflect both a new patent license deal (presumably the Kyocera deal) and "the collection of outstanding payments from a prior technology solutions customer."

    • The 3G/4G patent owner has soundly beat its revenue guidance the last two quarters. Q3 revenue of $100.4M compared with guidance (provided in August) of $77M-$80M.

    • InterDigital's (NASDAQ:IDCC) Covinda Wireless JV with Sony, formed in 2013 and initially focused on machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity, will now also research 5G technologies (expected to see major deployments towards decade's end).
    • The revised deal also features a patent license from InterDigital, The company has already been investing in 5G R&D, as it tries to strengthen its patent portfolio for the air interface and offset the expiration of older patents.

    • InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC) -2.9% AH after the U.S. International Trade Commission rejects the company’s request to block U.S. imports of Nokia-branded phones, lost an eight-year battle to claim patent royalties.
    • IDCC, which gets nearly all of its revenue from patent licensing, has sued companies that refused to pay royalties, contending that its inventions are an essential component of standardized 3G and 4G wireless technologies.
    • "Today’s decision is disappointing but is expected to have a limited impact on our going-forward business, given the decline of the Nokia mobile device business under Microsoft’s control and its limited market position,” CEO William Merritt says.
    • The case was filed in 2007 before Nokia sold its handset business to Microsoft.

    • InterDigital's (NASDAQ:IDCC) revenue guidance is below a 2-analyst $83.8M consensus.  The company notes the forecast is based primarily on royalty reports received to date, and doesn't account for new license deals, patent sales, arbitration rulings, etc.
    • Worth noting: In May, InterDigital guided for Q2 revenue of $89M-$91M, while providing a similar caveat. The company wound up reporting Q2 revenue of $118.6M.
    • Shares haven't yet moved after hours. They rose 3.3% in regular trading ahead of the announcement.

    • Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) accuses InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC) of violating a pledge to license its 3G/4G patents on FRAND terms, and claims the company has "engaged in an unlawful scheme to acquire and exploit monopoly power over technology necessary for companies to make 3G and 4G cellular devices."
    • Microsoft has frequently sparred in court with InterDigital, as did Nokia before Microsoft bought the company's phone unit.
    • In April, an ITC administrative law judge Microsoft phones infringe two InterDigital patents, and that InterDigital had fulfilled its obligation to offer to license the patents under reasonable terms. A commission ruling is expected on Aug. 28.

    • InterDigital's buyback authorization is good for repurchasing over 8% of shares at current levels. The 3G/4G patent owner had $911M in cash at the end of Q1, and $473M in long-term debt.

    • InterDigital is down fractionally AH. Shares closed today $1.50 below a 52-week high of $57.62.
