InterDigital (IDCC +3.8%), which soared last summer after putting itself on sale, and crashed after finding no buyers, rallied today on a dealReporter column claiming the company is again exploring a sale of its 3G/4G patents, according to sources. This time around, InterDigital is said to have split its portfolio into bundles to draw more buyers, and is "less ambitious on valuation." The company is reportedly "late into the first round of bidding."

InterDigital (IDCC) falls 18.1% AH after stating it has "concluded its review of strategic alternatives" without agreeing to a sale. Shares had soared last summer on hopes that one or more wireless industry players would make a large bid for the company's 3G/4G patent portfolio, but trended lower following Google's purchase of Motorola Mobility.

InterDigital (IDCC +6%), which had 14.8% of its float shorted as of Nov. 30, is up on a down day, thanks to renewed speculation about Google (GOOG) being interested in buying the 3G/4G patent holder (in spite of its pending acquisition of MMI). Nonetheless, InterDigital shares remain off sharply from their summer highs.

Having previously swung wildly on DealReporter leaks (I, II, III), InterDigital (IDCC -1.6%) isn't moving much following the latest scoop, which claims the company hasn't been making any progress in its review (i.e. sale) process. The fact InterDigital shares are down 43% from their July high suggests many investors have already tempered their hopes for a big M&A payoff.

DealReporter stories (I, II) continue to yank InterDigital (IDCC -5.8%) around. Shares have dived in afternoon trading following a report about potential buyers being in a "holding pattern." It's been over 3 months since InterDigital put itself on sale, during which time nearly every tech firm with use for a wireless patent has been linked to buyout talks (I, II).

The $4.5B sale of Nortel's patents to six tech companies (AAPL, MSFT, RIMM, EMC, ERIC, and SNE) is still being reviewed by the DOJ, according to Microsoft's IP chief. Regulatory challenges to the deal could potentially have an impact on the bidding for InterDigital (IDCC) and/or Eastman Kodak's (EK) patents.

M&A rumors continue giving InterDigital (IDCC +6.6%) investors vertigo. Shares rose today on a DealReporter story claiming bidders who had given up on buying the company may be reconsidering, and Intel (INTC) could be trying to form a consortium that would make a bid. 2 weeks ago, a DealReporter story sent InterDigital shares in the opposite direction.

InterDigital (IDCC -21.3%) goes into freefall after DealReporter claims buyout offers for the 3G/4G patent holder, which put itself on sale in July, have been in the $1B-$2B range. InterDigital's market cap was north of $2.5B heading into today's trading, as hopes ran high of a sale price comparable to that for Nortel's patent portfolio.

Intel (INTC), Ericsson (ERIC), and HTC (HTCCF.PK) are the latest companies said  to be weighing offers for 3G/4G patent holder InterDigital (IDCC -4.5%), while Google (GOOG) is viewed as losing interest now that it has MMI. Other names reported at some point to be considering offers include AAPL, QCOM, and NOK.

InterDigital (IDCC +1.9%) shot higher around 12:45, apparently on a new rumor about Qualcomm (QCOM) weighing an offer. Tiernan Ray is skeptical Qualcomm would be interested, though if InterDigital's patents allow Qualcomm to up its 4G royalty rate from 3.25% to the 5-6% rate it often charges for 3G devices, an offer could be worth it. Quck take on InterDigital: Nokia seems an unlikely suitor; it already has a strong patent portfolio, and acquiring InterDigital would consume much of its cash position. But Qualcomm is an intriguing candidate; it has plenty of cash, and could use InterDigital's 4G patents to boost its royalty rate on 4G phones, which is below its rate on 3G phones.

After falling hard on Monday following GOOG/MMI, InterDigital (IDCC +6.8%) is up today as Nokia (NOK) and Qualcomm (QCOM) reportedly join Apple (AAPL) and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) in weighing bids for the company. Google hasn't formally withdrawn its interest, but it's unclear whether it will still make a bid. (previously)

Jeffries' Peter Misek expects Apple (AAPL) to respond to "Googorola" with a patent-driven deal of its own. Misek sees Nokia (NOK), InterDigital (IDCC), and Research In Motion (RIMM) as potential targets. Of the three, InterDigital is the only one unlikely to raise the ire of regulators. Quick take on Google/Motorola: Expect Google to start shopping Motorola's phone and set-top box businesses; it likely has little interest in making cable boxes or directly competing with its Android hardware partners. Motorola's patents and R&D talent are the company's main focus. InterDigital (IDCC), rumored to be in buyout talks with Google and others, is down 19.4% premarket.

InterDigital (IDCC +1.1%) spikes to highs of the day on renewed speculation, launched weeks ago, that the company is an attractive target for Google (GOOG -3.2%) and others. In its attempts to acquire more patents, Google needs to build a “moat” of its own patents to avoid future litigation battles, and IDCC would fit the bill.
