    • Jack In The Box (JACK -5.4%) announces it will partner with DoorDash on a late-night delivery program in the San Francisco area.
    • The initiative opens up the entire Jack menu for delivery to customers in select SF areas until as late as 3 a.m.
    • “Unlike the daytime hours and the responsibilities that come with them, we believe that late night should be reserved for doing the things our guests enjoy the most,” says marketing VP Iwona Alter.
    • The company didn't indicate if a broader roll-put is planned.

    • Restaurant stocks are reeling after disappointing reports from Sonic (SONC -19.5%) and Brinker International (EAT -6.6%) to follow on some sluggish reads from other chains last week.
    • The two companies operate in different restaurant categories, but both cited some of the same traffic and labor costs issues.
    • Early decliners include Jack In The Box (JACK -3.4%), Wendy's (WEN -2.7%), Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD -1.6%), Habit Restaurants (HABT -3.5%) and The Cheesecake Factory (CAKE -3.2%).
    • Chipotle (CMG +0.2%) and Panera Bread (PNRA -2.1%) are next in line, with their earnings due later today after the market closes in what are highly-anticipated reports.

    • September CPI data: Food at home -2.2% Y/Y and -0.1% M/M, food away from home +2.4% Y/Y and +0.2% M/M
    • The high cost of eating out is seen by analysts as a major factor in why traffic has been falling this year. Rising healthcare and labor costs have pressured restaurant chains to ratchet up prices.

    • Jack in the Box Inc. (NASDAQ:JACK) announced that Vanessa C. Fox has been promoted to Corporate Vice President and Chief Development Officer.
    • Prior to promotion, Fox has been responsible for all company and franchised restaurant development for the Jack in the Box brand, including Construction, Real Estate and Architecture.
    • “Vanessa has done an amazing job overseeing restaurant development for Jack in the Box and, more recently, Qdoba,” said Lenny Comma, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer for Jack in the Box Inc. “Given our plans to accelerate growth for both brands, we could not have a more qualified person than Vanessa overseeing restaurant and franchise development.”

    • Early Q4 trends at Jack in the Box (NASDAQ:JACK) looks favorable, according to an update from Wedbush.
    • Channel checks from the investment firm show comparable sales running along near the +1.5% pace expected by analysts. Pressure in the restaurant sector has now lowered the bar over what comp mark is considered steady.
    • Wedbush sees EPS upside for Jack through increased buyback activity and refranchising opportunities.
    • The restaurant operators isn't due to report on Q3 earnings and update on Q4 progress until November 21.
    • More on Jack (a factoid from Nations Restaurant News' Jonathan Maze): Jack in The Box brings in 40% of its business now from breakfast or late night sales.

    • Don't spill your coffee in excitement, but it's National Taco Day today.
    • The holiday coincides with the introduction today by Chipotle (NYSE:CMG) of chorizo in all U.S. restaurants. Chipotle's summer loyalty program and several promotions aimed at kids ended in September, with the restaurant operator desperately looking to return to some normal pricing.
    • The intense competitive cadence from Chipotle has impacted other Mexican food chains such as Taco Bell (NYSE:YUM), Del Taco (NASDAQ:TACO), El Pollo Loco (NASDAQ:LOCO), Chevy's Fresh Mex (private), and Qdoba (NASDAQ:JACK). That group is also looking to improve their average ticket at restaurants through higher prices.

    • Restaurant stocks are out of favor after a brutal assessment on current trends by Sonic (SONC -6.2%) as part of its early look at FQ4 results.
    • "The shortfall was largely driven by lower-than-expected traffic, reflecting lower consumer spending in restaurants and continued aggressive competitive activity," noted Sonic CEO Cliff Hudson.
    • Only 5 restaurant stocks out of the 49 publicly-listed chains with a market cap of over $50M are in positive territory on the day. More than half the sector is showing a negative YTD return, despite a steady 6% return for the S&P 500 Index.
    • Decliners today include Dave & Buster's Entertainment (PLAY -3.5%), Jack in the Box (JACK -2.4%), Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD -1.7%), Fiesta Restaurant Group (FRGI -1%), McDonald's (MCD -1.7%), Denny's (DENN -1.3%), and Kona Grill (KONA -0.9%).

    • The company amends its existing senior credit facility, boosting it to $1.6B - a $700M term loan and $900M revolver. A total of $700M is outstanding on the term loan and $307.5M on the revolver.
    • The maturity date remains March 2019, and the interest rate will range from Libor plus 1.25% to Libor plus 2.25%. The rate is currently Libor plus 2%.
    • The amendment also boosts the maximum leverage ratio to 4x from 3.5x, and allows unlimited cash dividends and buybacks if it stays at 3.5x or less (vs. 3x previously).
    • Alongside, JACK's buyback authorization is boosted by $300M. As of the end of FQ3, the company had $150M remaining under the previous mandate.

    • The sluggish pace of restaurant sales in the U.S. is partially because of weakness in the lunch daypart, according to The NPD Group.
    • Data from NPD suggests that consumers are pushing back against high menu prices, especially in the fast-casual sector.
    • Another trend that may be factoring in is the increased percentage of employees working out of their house and skipping the lunchtime restaurant rush.
    • NPD reports that lunch traffic fell 4% in Q2, compared to a 1% drop for dinner traffic and a 1% increase in breakfast visits.
