"We expect slow growth to continue well into 2014," analyst Justin Yagerman notes, but says "this is not a bad environment for earnings growth as cost inflation is generally modest and volumes are expanding, albeit at a slower-than-desired pace."

The intermodal division, by far the largest contributor to the top line, reported revenue improved 15% to $796.3M amid volume growth of 13%, as well as improved revenue per load. Swift Transportation (SWFT +22.4%) jets higher after the company saw its Q4 profits soar past the estimate of analysts. A note in its report that it will increase capital expenditure spending by 43% this year bodes well for the trucking sector (JBHT, KNX, UACL, WERN, MRTN, CGI, HTLD), says Stephanie Link.

Hub Group (HUBG +2.8%) reported better than expected Q3 results, and Morgan Stanley is encouraged by the shipping firm's exposure to the "intermodal secular growth story." But the firm notes pricing difficulties HUBG faces, so it favors fellow intermodal play J.B. Hunt (JBHT +0.6%) for its "competitive advantage provided by its unique rail contracts."
