Newly unsealed court documents from a lawsuit filed by Bernie Madoff trustee Irving Picard show that JPMorgan Chase (JPM -0.5%) bank executives were suspicious of Madoff’s accounts and steered clients away from him but did not alert regulators. The suit also details the bank's efforts to make money by offering products tied to Madoff through investment funds that fed money to him.

Jamie Dimon (JPM) mounts an emotional defense of his bank - “J.P. Morgan bought Bear Stearns because the United States government asked us to!” - and his industry - "this constant refrain 'bankers, bankers, bankers' is just a really unproductive and unfair way of treating people." Dimon may be a great banker, but he needs a history lesson, David Weidner writes.

E-mails show that Bear Stearns cheated clients out of billions, and JPMorgan Chase (JPM -0.8%) may be on the hook, The Atlantic reports. Former Bear mortgage execs are accused of defrauding investors through shoddy mortgage securities they engineered and sold while at Bear Stearns, and JPMorgan apparently knew about the alleged fraud since 2008.

Chase Bank (JPM) gets a win at the Supreme Court, which rules that the bank didn't have to give written notice of rate hikes to credit card holders who defaulted on a payment. It overturns an appeals court ruling that a class-action suit could go forward; the regulation in question is an old rule that was amended to provide 45 days notice.

How was it that Goldman Sachs' (GS -3.1%) earnings fell 38% last year, as peers like JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Wells Fargo (WFC) posted increases? Yves Smith has no tolerance for Jamie Dimon's (JPM) crocodile tears over the "long, ugly mess" in fixing foreclosures. The real intent, she says, is to deflect calls for the big banks to bear more costs: "They piously pretend that they are taking their medicine... In reality, the costs are passed along and the risks of them doing a bad job are borne by someone else."

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is starting work on a simplified mortgage-disclosure form of one or two pages that would make it far easier for consumers to compare deals - which, if it follows similar developments in industries like insurance, would likely dent profits for the big providers (BAC, WFC, JPM, C) and make community banks more competitive.
