    Home health providers are in for a rough session after Baird downgrades the entire sector to sell and slashes price targets. Noting the stocks have moved up in anticipation of the best outcome for the Medicare update, Baird says the actual result - including the rebase - couldn't have been worse. "Importantly, CMS's methodology ties its hands and leaves very little hope for a large reprieve in the final rule." AMED -12.8%, GTIV -11.7%, AFAM -9.5%, LHCG -5.9% premarket.

    LHC Group (LHCG +3.5%) hit a new 52-week high today after the company said it has acquired the assets of Infirmary Hospice Care in Alabama. The acquisition forms part of LHCG's strategy of acquiring hospice providers within it's home health markets. LHC owns 34 hospice locations in 10 states. The Alabama facility generates annual revenue of about $2.5M, and will continue to operate under the name Infirmary Hospice Care through 2013.

    LHC Group (LHCG -3.5%) decides to remain independent, ending a strategic review the home health and hospice services provider began last year. LHCG says it may repurchase up to $50M of its outstanding shares with cash on hand or borrowings under debt facilities. TPG Capital reportedly had considered making an offer for the company.

    P-E firm TPG Capital is considering making an offer for LHC Group (LHCG +3.8%), Reuters reports, as the provider of home health and hospice services reviews its strategic alternatives. LHCG has been hit by a series of setbacks, including reimbursement cuts, federal investigations into billing practices and new Medicare regulations.

    Shares of home-health firm LHC Group (LHCG +9.2%) are higher today on better than expected guidance for FY12. Revenue should come in around $640M - $660M, and its EPS expected to be in the range of $1.45 - $1.65, better than Street estimates of $1.42. Separately, Coliseum Capital, a beneficial owner of the company, also recently bought an additional 22K shares.

    LHC Group (LHCG -15.3%) gets hit after the company says its Q3 earnings will be below estimates due to higher legal and administrative costs, and lowers guidance for FY11. It now expects to report an EPS loss in the range of $2.10 - $2.25 on revenue of $150M - $155M. Separately, SunTrust downgrades the shares to Neutral on the news.

    An inquiry by the Senate Finance Committee finds the nation's three largest home-health companies tailored the care they provided to Medicare patients to maximize reimbursements. The three companies, Amedisys (AMED -4.8%), LHC (LHCG -5.3%) and Gentiva (GTIV -14%), rely on Medicare for most of their revenues.
