An Arkansas judge has delayed the shutdown of an Enterprise Products (EPD) Texas-to-Indiana distillate pipeline shippers say is critical to supply for markets along its route, after Murphy Oil (MUR), one of many shippers opposed to the shutdown, sought and won an order. EPD says distillate flows are too low to justify the expense to upgrade a parallel gasoline and natural gas liquids pipeline to also move distillates.

Better get your story straight: Murphy Oil (MUR) says an exploration well drilled in the Browse basin off Western Australia will be plugged and abandoned after failing to find commercial amounts of gas, and expects to expense the well in Q2. Australian partner Santos (STOSF.PK) had said a few hours earlier that it considered the well a discovery. Total (TOT) holds a 50% interest in the well, Santos 30%, MUR 20%.

ConocoPhillips (COP), Suncor (SU) and Husky Energy (HUSKF.PK) offer the best value among energy shares, with Exxon (XOM) and Murphy Oil (MUR) at the bottom of the value heap, Barclays says. COP will rely on its "unmatched" North American unconventional oil portfolio to get better returns for its investments, the firm says in upgrading shares to Overweight with an $80 target (from $67).

The shale bonanza has sparked a switch in the behavior of oil firms: Companies have been selling off assets overseas and pumping money back into the U.S. Conoco (COP) has been involved in six major foreign sales in the past year totaling $11B, and much of it is being redirected into North Dakota and Texas shale. Other firms redirecting overseas assets to the U.S.: HES, DVN, APA, MRO, MUR, NBL.

Murphy Oil (MUR -0.4%) plans to file final paperwork with the SEC next week in hopes of receiving approval to spin off its entire U.S. retail division, and will seek a favorable IRS ruling for the spinoff as a tax-free transaction. Also, MUR changes its mind and says it will not sell its 5% stake in Alberta's Syncrude oil sands project and its shale gas properties in western Canada.

Murphy Oil (MUR +0.7%) is initiated with a Buy rating and $71 price target at Brean Murray. This year looks to be catalyst-laden, the firm says, with MUR's possible downstream segment spinoff expected midyear, a 12-15 well international exploration program, and oily production growth from ramping activity in its North American resource plays.
