    • "Practices such as those have no place in our supply chain," Nestle and P&G responded, adding that they would "remedy any potential human rights infringements."

    • It's National Coffee Day in the U.S., but it's weather in Brazil and Vietnam that is the focus of the coffee industry.
    • Drought conditions and crop disease concerns have pushed prices higher and created some short-term supply constraints.
    • Indexmundi.com shows robusta coffee prices are up 18% YTD and mild arabicas prices are 16% higher.
    • Higher commodity prices can hit packaged coffee sellers harder than chains selling fresh coffee, although hedging activity also plays a larger factor in how individual companies shake out.
    • On a consumer level, don't expect any relief at Starbucks on their base coffee prices ($1.85 tall, $2.10 grande, $2.45 venti) anytime soon.

    • Nestle (OTCPK:NSRGY, OTCPK:NSRGF) announces key changes to its executive board, topped by news of the retirement of Luis Cantarall on December 31. The long-time Nestle exec is currently in charge of the Europe, Middle East and North Africa business.
    • Marco Settembri will take over the vacated position on January 1. Settembri runs the company' waters division.
    • Market head Maurizo Patarnello is slotted to be the next waters chief.
    • All of the changes follow the announcement from June of the hiring of Ulf Mark Schneider to be Nestle's CEO.

    • As previously reported, Bayer (OTCPK:BAYRY) aims to jettison its dermatology business in order to help fund its Monsanto buy. Although discussions are in the early phase, there appears to be plenty of interested parties. In addition to skincare-focused players like Allergan (NYSE:AGN), Almirall (OTC:LBTSF) and Nestle (OTCPK:NSRGY)(OTCPK:NSRGF), Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NASDAQ:TEVA), Perrigo (NASDAQ:PRGO) and Sun Pharma (OTC:SMPQY) are also reportedly in the mix.
    • On the institutional investor side, KKR (NYSE:KKR), Nordic Capital, Bain Capital, Blackstone Group (NYSE:BX) and Cinven may also be eyeing the unit which, analysts say, could fetch $1.1B.

    • Data from NPD Group indicates that 11% of millennials use craft coffee brewing to satisfy their daily coffee cravings.
    • It's a trend to watch with younger consumers representing 44% of at-home craft coffee brewers of which a third live in urban areas.
    • It's not clear if the increase in at-home craft coffee consumption is peeling away meaningful packaged coffee sales or store traffic to chains, but there could be a reputational risk to national brands on quality in the future.

    • S&P 500 remains vulnerable to a pull-back into early Sept. before rebounding into end of month, where U.S. market should hit an important medium-term top, UBS technical analysts write in a note to clients.
    • As long as S&P trades below 2194, the market remains vulnerable for more consolidation; support at 2150 and 2134/2120.
    • With the market starting to anticipate rising interest rates, defensive sectors are losing further ground, while financials are gaining momentum relatively.
    • In a separate note, UBS said the odds of a stock-market crash are rising, noting that equities are trading at very high multiples and don’t appear to be pricing level of macro risk “that we’re witnessing in the market."

    • Nestle (OTCPK:NSRGY) reported its slowest first-half sales growth since 2009, with revenue increasing 3.5% on an organic basis, as the world's largest food company struggled to raise prices.
    • Net profit fell to 4.1B Swiss francs ($4.2B), missing estimates, due to a one-off non-cash adjustment to deferred taxes.
    • While pricing has reached "historically low levels," it should rebound "somewhat" in coming months, said Nestle CEO Paul Bulcke, confirming a 4.2% organic growth target for 2016.

    • A bill requiring food companies to label GMO ingredients was approved by the U.S. Senate by a 63 to 30 vote and now heads to the House of Representatives.
    • The negotiated bill requires food companies to label genetically modified food by a phrase, symbol on the package, or a bar code that can be scanned by smartphones.
    • The Department of agriculture still has two years to write the precise labeling rules if the House approves the bill.
    • The passage of the bill is seen as a positive for the food sector as the alternative of having to adhere to state-by-state rules could create operational chaos for national sellers.

    • Nestle (OTCPK:NSRGY, OTCPK:NSRGF) names Ulf Mark Schneider as its new CEO, succeeding Paul Bulcke, effective January 1.
    • Schneider will come from healthcare provider Fresenius (OTCQX:FSNUF, OTCQX:FSNUY), where he has been CEO since 2003, and Nestle says his appointment would accelerate its expansion as a “nutrition, health and wellness company.”
    • Bulcke will be nominated to become Chairman at the company's annual general meeting in April 2017, to replace Peter Brabeck-Letmathe.
