Nvidia (NVDA) and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) have unveiled the latter's Galaxy R Android phone. Running on Nvidia's Tegra 2 chip and aimed at developing nations, the Galaxy R is a trimmed-down version of the popular Galaxy S II. Nonetheless, it represents an important design win for Nvidia, given Tegra's limited uptake thus far in the smartphone market. (PR)

Quick take on AMD/smartphones: Some investors might not like AMD's decision, but it's probably a smart one, given Intel's (INTC) failures in getting its Atom platform adopted in smartphones, and the resources AMD would need to produce an ARM-based (ARMH) chip that can compete with solutions from QCOM, TXN, NVDA, and others.

In a sign of how integrated graphics solutions are taking share from discrete chips, Jon Peddie Research believes Intel's (INTC) graphics chip market share surged 6% Q/Q in Q2 to 60.7%, while Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD's shares fell 2.4% and 3.5%, respectively. Meanwhile, an estimated 6.3% Y/Y increase in unit shipments raises questions of an inventory buildup.

Nvidia (NVDA) gains 3.3% following a Mercury Research report stating the company's notebook graphics processor (GPU) share rose 8.9% in Q2, dispelling fears that AMD's weak Q2 graphics sales were a sign of broader weakness. However, Jeffries cautions that the notebook market's growing focus on low-power solutions will hurt Nvidia's GPU sales.

With PC industry pessimism steadily rising, analysts think laptops featuring chips using ARM Holdings (ARMH) CPU designs, made possible by Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows 8, could provide a lift by enabling "lighter machines with all-day battery life." Nvidia (NVDA) and Qualcomm (QCOM) are looking to sell ARM-based chips to PC manufacturers.

A day after UBS lowered its PT on Nvidia (NVDA -1.8%), Needham is downgrading the company to Sell. Needham sees only 4% growth for Nvidia's graphics processor business in 2012, and is also cutting its estimates for the company's Tegra processors. However, Raymond James is bullish, believing the current quarter will be better than the market expects.

Nvidia (NVDA) is down 2.6% after UBS' Uche Orji cut his PT to $16.50 from $20, while reiterating a Hold. Orji believes AMD's Q2 graphics weakness doesn't bode well for Nvidia's results (due next month), and also sees strong competition for the company's Tegra smartphone and tablet processors from Texas Instruments (TXN) and Qualcomm (QCOM).

Nvidia (NVDA) is now up 4.8% following Intel's (INTC -1%) Q2 results, as the latter's PC-related numbers and commentary proved less bearish than expected. By contrast, hard drive giant Western Digital (WDC -8.1%) and solid-state drive vendor OCZ Technology (OCZ -5.2%) are both trading down following Seagate's (STX -16.7%) guidance.

Quick take on iSuppli/ARM: If accurate, iSuppli's forecast translates into billions in lost revenues for Intel (INTC) and AMD. However, it presents a huge opportunity for Nvidia (NVDA) and Qualcomm (QCOM), who are developing ARM chips for the PC market. The opportunity becomes larger if Apple (AAPL) and others use ARM chips in high-end notebooks, due to their low power consumption.

Addressing concerns about delays, TSMC (TSM) is reaffirming plans to begin selling chips using its 28nm manufacturing process in Q3. That's welcome news for Nvidia (NVDA) and Qualcomm (QCOM), who are using TSMC to handle 28nm chip releases. TSMC is also reaffirming its 20% 2011 growth target, which surpasses the consensus estimate of 17%.

Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) may be downbeat on near-term demand, but In-Stat sees chip content for tablets soaring to $14B by 2015. E-Readers are also expected to see major chip consumption growth. Flash memory manufacturers and application processor vendors such as Nvidia (NVDA) and Qualcomm (QCOM) are in line to benefit.
