    • Polypore International (PPO) +7.7% premarket after announcing a five-year lithium-ion separator supply agreement with Panasonic (PCRFY), and authorizing a repurchase of up to 4.5M common shares.
    • Q1 results were mixed, however, with earnings falling short of expectations but revenues rising 10% Y/Y; sales of lead-acid battery separators rose 4% while lithium battery separator sales jumped 23% due to higher volumes in electric drive vehicles.
    • DA Davidson upgrades shares to Buy from Neutral and raises its price target to $42 from $36, citing PPO's flexibility to increase capital investments in strategic growth opportunities through the recent debt restructuring and subsequent lower interest rates.

    Panasonic (PCRFY.OB): FY13 net loss of ¥754.3B (versus net loss of ¥772.2B in FY12) misses by ¥10B. Operating profit of ¥160.94B beats by ¥15B. Revenue of ¥7.303T. Forecast: FY14 net profit of ¥50B, operating profit of ¥250B, revenue of ¥7.2T.

    Panasonic (PC) shares surge 17.9% in Tokyo - the stock's biggest gain since September 1974 - after the company made a surprise profit in FQ3. "Panasonic seems to have turned a corner,” says fund manager Masamitsu Ohki. "That is easing investor concerns about its survival." Sony (SNE) climbed 7.5% ahead of its earnings on Thursday, while Sharp rose 5.5% after it last week reported its first operating profit in five quarters.

    Panasonic (PC): FQ3 net profit ¥61B ($662M) vs a loss of ¥198B last year and consensus for a loss of ¥17B. Operating profit ¥34.6B vs loss of ¥8.1B a year earlier. Sales -8% to ¥1.8T. Earnings boosted by the weakening yen and the massive job cuts that Panasonic has carried out since April.     More on Panasonic (PC) FQ2: To write off ¥238B ($2.99B) in goodwill related to mobile phone, solar panels and small lithium batteries operations. Now predicts FY net loss of ¥765B vs July guidance for a profit ¥50B, operating profit of ¥140B vs ¥260B prior. The writedowns come as new boss Kazuhiro Tsuga cleans house and prepares a turnaround plan.

    More on Panasonic (PC) FQ1: net profit strengthened by cost cuts as company undergoes a massive revamp. Maintains FY forecast for net profit of ¥50B, op profit of ¥260B and sales of ¥8.1T. "Their outlook doesn't suggest a solid turnaround is under way. It continues to be tough for them," said asset manager Makoto Kikuchi prior to the results.

    Panasonic (PC): FQ4 loss balloons more than tenfold to ¥438.4B ($5.5B). Sales -8% to ¥1.88T. Full-year record net loss of ¥772.1B ($9.67B) on TV unit woes.     Panasonic (PC) reports a ¥197.6B ($2.6B) net loss for the Oct.-Dec. quarter, and expects its full year results to be its worst ever at a projected loss of ¥780B. Contributing factors: a strong yen, production problems related to Thai flooding, costs from its absorption of Sanyo, a global slowdown, and eurozone-driven instability in financial markets.

    Panasonic (PC) is on track to make a net loss of ¥300B ($3.95B) this FY, Nikkei reports, way worse than the firm's forecast for a profit of ¥30B. Panasonic is being hit by the global slowdown, the yen's strength, the Thai floods, and soaring restructuring costs. The firm is due to report FQ2 results tomorrow.

    Panasonic (PC) expects its operating profit to fall 11% to ¥270B yen ($3.4B) in FY 2012 due to the damage from Japan's earthquake, although the prediction is above analyst estimates of ¥262.6B. Shares closed +0.5% in Tokyo.
