    Commercial shipping traffic on the Mississippi River was halted at Granite City, Illinois after a vessel struck one of the Army Corp of Engineers locks on the river. The low level of several rivers in the Midwest has helped stoke up extra demand for railroad carriers as an alternative for transport.

    Railroad companies could see more demand with more reports now out that the low level of the Mississippi River will limit the ability of barges to run up and down the river. The biggest danger is that a 200-mile stretch of the mighty river between St. Louis, Missouri and Cairo, Illinois could be effectively closed. Waiting in the wings: CSX, RA, CNI, PWX, GWR, CP, NSC, KSU, UNP.

    Genesee & Wyoming (GWR) is buying RailAmerica (RA) for $1.39B. The $27.50/share is a 10.6% premium to RA's Friday close and a 27.6% premium to its close on May 21, the last trading day before it announced it would explore strategic alternatives. (PR)

    RailAmerica (RA +4.6%) has attracted takeover interest from rival transportation companies Genesee & Wyoming (GWR +0.8%) and Watco, as well as several funds, Reuters reports. In May, RA said it hired Deutsche Bank to evaluate strategic options. Fortress Investment Group (FIG +0.3%) holds a 60% stake in the company.

    With rumors flying about RailAmerica (RA) and the company disclosing that it's considering strategic alternatives, Wells Fargo takes the line that there is some meat on the bone. Analysts reiterate an Overweight rating on RA, citing strong fundamentals and the potential for bidding action. Shares +10.2% premarket to $24.50, after jumping 2.7% yesterday in a late afternoon rally.

The railroad operator also says it's spending $40M to acquire Marquette Rail, and $18M to acquire a 70% stake in the Wellsboro and Corning railroad.

    Genesee & Wyoming (GWR +2.7%) carload traffic rose again in August, marking four and a half straight years of increases. The railroad operator's largest commodity group, coal and coke, increased 7.5% Y/Y. The data contrasts with RailAmerica's (RA) earlier report, which said traffic dropped in August for the fifth straight month because of a big decline in coal, its top commodity as well.
