Alcatel Lucent (ALU +2.5%) reportedly is nearing a deal with Sprint (S -0.9%) to use ALU's new telecom gear designed to help wireless networks handle more calls. ALU's CTO says several U.S. carriers are testing and may soon deploy lightRadio, a small device that can be mounted on rooftops, phone poles and bus shelters to expand a network's capacity in a given spot.

Sprint (S) won't count the impact of the iPhone on the company's profits while calculating employee bonuses, according to a regulatory filing yesterday. The result is that CEO Dan Hesse's bonus will come in at $1.77M for 2011 instead of $1.53M, with Sprint justifying the move by saying it didn't have the iPhone on its radar when it set performance metrics last year.

Following Sprint's (S -1.7%) earnings release yesterday, Credit Suisse now expects the carrier to report a combined loss of 364,000 contract customers in 2012-13, a change from a forecast gain of 919,000. CS sees greater customer turnover among users of Sprint's older network technologies as it upgrades to 4G LTE during the next several years.

Buried in a giant Congressional bill is a clause requiring the FCC to ignore factors such as market dominance when determining a company's eligibility for a spectrum auction. The clause is supported by wireless behemoths Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T) - the latter badly wants more spectrum after the FCC helped block the T-Mobile deal. Sprint (S), T-Mobile, Leap Wireless (LEAP), and others oppose it.

Sprint's (S -1.8%) slightly better-than-expected quarter, weighed by heavy spending to support iPhone sales, doesn't seem to have changed any Street minds: the $15.5B Sprint spent is either money well spent or it isn't. "We're ahead of the game," CEO Dan Hesse says, with iPhones sold in the quarter "significantly higher" than expected and continuing to sell well.

Sprint (S) attempts to challenge the Kindle Fire by offering the ZTE Optik, a 7-inch Android tablet sporting a Qualcomm (QCOM) Snapdragon processor, for $100 with a 2-year contract ($350 without a contract). 3G tablet sales have lately failed to keep pace with the tablet market's overall growth, and that's proving a hindrance for Qualcomm and other wireless chipmakers.

Sprint (S) tells LightSquared it has until mid-March to receive FCC clearance to build its 4G LTE network, or else Sprint will terminate its 15-year network-sharing deal with the company. LightSquared's prospects took a major hit 2 weeks ago following the release of a critical letter supported by 9 government agencies. Without LightSquared, Sprint will badly need Clearwire's (CLWR) spectrum to build out its LTE network.

RadioShack (RSH -28.9%) shares are downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Janney, which says RSH is "seeing a somewhat dramatic shift to a structurally lower gross margin, and we are unclear where this shift will bottom out."
